American Red Cross volunteers deployed along east coast to help evacuees

This family has taken shelter in a Virginia shelter. In anticipation of Hurricane Harriet, more then 10,000 Red Cross volunteers have been mobilized all along the eastern seaboard to bring much needed shelter and comfort to residents and visitors in the path of the storm. An estimated 70,000 people need shelter in Virginia and Red Cross evacuation shelters have been set up to welcome families to a safe place to ride out the storm. In North Carolina Approximately, 25,000 men, women and children have sought shelter and many have been in their temporary safe haven for nearly two days. Those affected by the storm are encouraged to contact a loved one to update them on their location and ask them to sign them up at the safe and well site at www.redcross.org. For those in the path of the storm, it is critical you listen to directions from authorities and evacuate when asked.
